When it comes to wasps they aren't near the top of many peoples friends list. Whether it's a fear of being stung, an allergic reaction to their sting or a bad memory of an interaction with a wasp, here at Lakeland Pest Solutions we aim to eradicate a wasp nest safely and hassle free.
A wasp nest starts with a queen that emerges from over wintering around Spring time and begins finding a suitable place (usually the eaves of a property) to begin her nest. Sometimes a queen will start a nest then change her mind and start another! These small golf ball size nests are often found in loft spaces and garden sheds. Once the queen has decided on nest she then begins to build and soon lays the first batch of worker eggs (fertilised the previous late Summer). Once these workers hatch they take over building duties and the queen focuses on laying more eggs. The wasp nest can soon boom in size with hundreds of workers gathering building material and food for the larvae in the nest. Towards the end of the nest life cycle, the queen begins to lay male (drone) eggs and virgin queen eggs. once these have hatched they then mate. The drones die off naturally and the now fertilised queens begin to leave the nest to find somewhere to over winter. Once the current queen of the nest dies, all the remaining wasps disperse looking for sugar to provide them with energy. As the weather begins to cool in late Autumn, and naturally sugar foods deplete, so do the wasp numbers. Then it starts all over again!
